Pavilion Cottages

Description

Pavilion Cottages, off Colley Lane, n of the Dorking road. 1937 by Sir Edwin & Robert Lutyens, in pretty weatherboarded style with cedar shingle roofs and the timber-clad chimneys of Cedar House, Chobham (q.v.). A cottage at either end and, originally, the cricket pavilion in the middle. They have a spontaneity normally hard to find in late Lutyens. (O’Brien et al., 2022, p.617)

Among the miscellaneous buildings which come nearer the category of country-house work than any other is that shown on Plate CVI and the photograph (figure 268). It was built in 1937 for the owner of an estate who wished to give his men a cricket pavilion combined with two cottages and is another admirable instance of the occasional partnership between Sir Edwin and his son, Robert Lutyens. This work is related to the Cedar House, already noted, in the use made again of that material for covering the walls with boarding and the roof with shingles. As well, the chimney-stacks are again thickened with cedar and capped with roofing-tiles in cement. The walls are slightly battered and an additional refinement is the gradual grading of the boards on them from 7 inches at the bottom to 5 inches at the top. The columns are made of artificial stone; the window frames are painted white and the doors green. The blank ground floor of the two cottage walls on the main front not only give solidity to the design but it might be pointed out that the omission of quite unnecessary windows there saves the parlours from the glances of inquisitive cricketers.
