Description

Formerly listed in Witley C.P. Boathouse. 1897 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Whitaker Wright, The Financier. Ashlar below with rendered cladding in end gables and plain tiled roofs. T-shaped plan with short arm projecting into lake. Lake front elevation – Central pedimented bay projecting on paired Doric pilasters with strapwork Cartouche in tympanum and pedestal below. Circular steps project into the lake from the centre of the pedestal plinth with flights to either side connecting to stone paved balcony in front of two-windowed ranges flanking central projecting range. C20 casements to either side between Doric pilasters and under eaves cornice. Semi-circular projections to ends with turned wooden balusters over, flanked by scrolls. Centre door to lower level leading to boathouse under, further entrance above with stone flagged passage back to bank. Bankside Elevation – Modillion eaves cornice over. Central entrance flanked by two columns in antis and under large arched Carolean porch hood on elaborate carved scroll brackets. Gabled pediments to return fronts with plasterwork cartouches. Semi-circular arched openings to basements with voussoirs over, and double wicket gates across the front. Curving quadrant retaining walls to ends of boathouse along the bank with scroll decorated steps. (Nairn and Pevsner, 1971, p.531)
