STABLES. By Wyatt, 1791. A quadrangle with a tall arched entrance below a lantern. In front of the entrance, in the centre of a rond-point by Lutyens, a Coade stone urn on a pedestal. GARDENS. Partly remodelled by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the work being completed in 1938. The principal features are a paved terrace on the s front, extending w through a section with radial brick paving to a pair of obelisks and beyond a circular pond enclosed by three segments of walling each flanked by bronze urns, and a canal, or what Lutyens would have called a ‘sky mirror’, set at right angles to the house, 177 metres (580 ft) long, and ending in a circular basin with a big statue of Milo by Lough at the centre. (Pevsner et al, 1992, p.189)

Painting of the Garden at Blagdon Hall – oil on canvas. The painting is in the style of a conversation piece, showing the Ridley family in the garden at Blagdon. Gertrude Jeykll, two years before her death, planned the garden for Lutyens’ daughter Ursula, Viscountess Ridley, who created a wild Quarry Garden and magnificent new borders. Planting plans are still extant at the University of California. (Amery et al., 1981, cat no.149)
