Address Ashby St Ledgers Rugby, Northamptonshire CV23 8UN England

Description

The stylised, flattened Memorial Cross which Lutyens designed for the Imperial War Graves Commission was more generally used for village and churchyard memorials throughout Britain than in the cemeteries. Here, raised on a high plinth on steps, it is combined with an exaggerated base which serves as a seat. In front of the Cross is the tomb of Lutyens’s important client the 1st Viscount Wimborne (1880-1939). (Amery et al, 1981, Cat no. 304)

Altar tomb. 1939 by Sir Edwin Lutyens to Ivor Churchill Guest, Lord Wimborne, died 1939. Portland stone with slate top. Deep hollow chamfered base. South and north sides of tomb have central inscription plaque flanked by roundels in moulded frames recording birth and death of Lord Wimborne on the south side, and of Alice his wife on the north. Coat of arms in the cartouche surmounted by coronet on west side and shield of arms with supporters and motto to the east. Cross (q.v.) also forms part of memorial.
